EXTRA PROTEIN By Richard Douglas, 5/7 RAR
While I was on UNTAC deployment in Cambodia in 1992, I was on a job out in the weeds with Stephen McMillan. It was Grand Final day so we had a few bottles of Mekong and listened to our team get done by The Broncos.
We had been on it solid for about four hours and it was time for dinner. I was sitting there with the entire detachment and the Ghanaian Police Commander when this huge grasshopper landed on the table. Being majorly pissed, I thought there wasn’t enough protein in the meal, so I grabbed the grasshopper and chomped it down in one hit. I thought it was piss funny. The police commander disagreed – I thought they’d be used to eating insects.
