THINGS TO GO ‘BANG’ IN THE NIGHT By Dean Cooke, 4 RAR/NZ
We were having our evening Aussie ration meal when a dull bang pierced the air on dusk. Of course, with everyone being new chums and feeling a little tense, it gave us quite a start. Macka McClymont had forgotten about a small tin of cheese he’d placed on his hexy stove, resulting in the tin exploding. We would often dent the cheese tin, placing it on the hexamine stove to make the cheese runny. When the dent popped out, it was time to remove it and enjoy the runny cheese. Just a small delight when out bush we had learnt in Aussie.
